Increase Daily Steps

8,000 to 12,000 a day. The cheapest mortality intervention in existence.

What it does

Non-exercise movement keeps metabolic rate elevated and breaks up the sedentary blocks that independently predict mortality. The curve flattens around 8,000; the meaningful gains come from getting off zero. A floor under structured exercise, not a substitute for it.

Light activity drives skeletal-muscle glucose uptake, lipid clearance, and post-meal metabolic response. Breaking up sedentary time appears to matter independently of total minutes moved.

  • all-cause mortality risk
  • metabolic activation

What the evidence shows

Overall evidence strength: High certainty

Who it's for, who should skip

Anyone sedentary. 8,000–12,000/day with sedentary blocks broken every 30–60 min; the 10,000 number is a 1960s marketing figure, and benefit accrues well below it.
